Which Barrette Models This Applies To
Barrette’s paver line isn’t as sprawling as Belgard’s, but there are still compatibility traps if you grab the wrong unit. The most common profiles we see in Fort Myers driveways and patios are the Holland Stone and the larger Plaza Stone, both of which use a tongue-and-groove or interlocking spacer-lug system. The critical measurement is paver thickness. Barrette driveway-rated units are typically 60mm or 80mm. A 40mm paver is for walkways and patios only; put vehicle weight on it and it’ll crack within a season. If you’re matching existing work, flip a loose paver over and look for the mold number stamped on the bottom. That number, plus the color code, gets you an exact match. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but Barrette’s color blends – especially the tumbled finishes – are proprietary. An off-brand “close” paver will look wrong in direct Florida sunlight, and it’ll annoy you every time you pull into the driveway.
Signs Your Barrette Driveway or Pavers Are Failing
- Settling or sinking sections. A low spot where water pools after rain usually means the compacted base has eroded. In Fort Myers, this is almost always sand migration from underneath, accelerated by our summer downpours.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. This points to a load-bearing issue, not a single bad paver. The base wasn’t thick enough for the traffic it’s carrying, and the pavers are flexing until they snap.
- Edging restraint pulling away. Barrette’s plastic or aluminum edging can separate from the pavers if the spikes weren’t driven deep enough or the soil behind it wasn’t backfilled properly. Once the edge opens, pavers start drifting outward and the whole border loosens.
- Efflorescence that won’t quit. A white chalky haze is normal on new concrete pavers, but if it keeps coming back after cleaning, moisture is being trapped underneath. That trapped water eventually degrades the sand joints and softens the base.
- Joint sand washing out repeatedly. If you sweep polymeric sand into the joints and it’s gone after two storms, water is moving underneath the pavers fast enough to flush it out. That’s a drainage problem, not a sand problem.
