Bufftech Fence Installation: The Fort Myers Owner’s Guide

The easiest way to identify what you have is to check the bottom of a picket or the inside face of a post cap. Bufftech molds their name and the series stamp into the vinyl, usually near the bottom rail channel. If the stamp has worn off, bring us a close-up photo of the grain pattern and a post-cap measurement. CertaGrain has a wood-like texture you can feel, SimTek is a molded simulated stone panel, and Brookhaven reads closer to a smooth painted finish. The post dimensions are the real tell: most residential Bufftech uses 5×5 posts, but Imperial steps up to a thicker-walled 5×5 that takes a heavier gate hinge. Mixing series parts looks wrong and fails early, especially at the gate post where the load concentrates.
We use OEM Bufftech components unless a part is discontinued, in which case we source a spec-matched equivalent from a manufacturer that holds the same ASTM wind-load ratings. Aftermarket vinyl that doesn’t match the original UV stabilizer blend will chalk and yellow in two Fort Myers summers. We won’t install it.
Signs Your Bufftech Fence Installation Is Failing
- Leaning sections, especially after rain. The post footings weren’t deep enough or didn’t have enough concrete mass for our soil. In Fort Myers, a 5×5 vinyl post needs at least 30 inches of depth and a 12-inch diameter concrete column to hold square through wet season.
- Gates dragging or refusing to latch. The hinge-side post has started to tilt. Bufftech gate posts take all the swing load, and if the footing shifts even half an inch, the latch bar misses the catch. This is the number-one call we get in communities off Daniels Parkway and south of Colonial.
- Bottom rails bowed or cracked mid-span. Vinyl expands and contracts. If the installer butted the rail tight into the post pocket with no room for thermal movement, it buckles. We saw this on a CertaGrain privacy fence in Fort Myers Shores last month. The rails swelled, popped the post cap, and the whole section dominoed.
- Chalky, faded pickets on one side only. The south and west exposures take a beating here. Bufftech uses UV inhibitors, but if the fence was installed pre-2010 or if someone power-washed it with a zero-degree tip, the surface protection is gone. The vinyl gets brittle and cracks at the rail channels.
- Posts pulling out of the ground in a straight line. We see this on fences that run parallel to a canal or retention pond. The water table rises, the soil liquefies, and the footings weren’t belled at the bottom. The post lifts like a cork. It’s a footing failure, not a Bufftech failure.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely handle a visual inspection yourself. Walk the line with a level and a tape measure. If a picket has popped out of the bottom rail, you might be able to snap it back in by working from the end of the section. Those are the safe calls.
Gate-post replacement is where DIY goes sideways. A loaded Bufftech gate assembly with the hinges, latch, and wind exposure puts a lot of rotational force on the post footing. If the old footing has to be dug out and re-poured, and the gate re-hung so it swings true and latches on the first try, that’s a two-person job with a concrete mixer and a long level.
