Schluter Driveway & Pavers Nationwide

Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Fort Myers Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a paver driveway or patio with a Schluter edge detail or drainage channel that’s separating, cracking, or holding water where it shouldn’t, we stock and install Schluter-compatible profiles and drainage parts here in Fort Myers and can typically get the job done in a single visit. Installed cost for Schluter edge-profile or channel replacement on an existing paver surface in Fort Myers runs $300-$1,200 depending on linear footage and how much sub-base work shrank or shifted underneath over time.

Most homeowners find the problem the same way: a paver near the edge feels loose underfoot, or the Schluter track that was supposed to keep the border tight has pulled away from the concrete collar. In Fort Myers, our wet season saturation and sandy-loam soil practically guarantee some slab-edge creep after a few summers. Derek Hollenbeck has pulled up enough Schluter BARA and DITRA-HEAT-E borders in Lee County to know the failure is rarely the metal itself. It’s what the original installer set it into, or didn’t.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

We work with Schluter profiles and drainage systems most commonly spec’d into South Florida paver and exterior tile installations. The parts we stock and replace regularly include:

  • Schluter-SCHIENE, QUADEC, and RONDEC edge profiles in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. These get used as paver-border trim where a driveway apron or walkway meets a garage slab or stucco wall. Lengths are 8 ft 2-1/2 in, with heights from 5/16 in up to 1 in. The gotcha in Fort Myers is salt-corrosion pitting on standard aluminum within five years if the profile sits within 1,500 feet of tidal water. We spec marine-grade stainless or PVC-coated SCHIENE-STYLE for anything on the barrier islands or McGregor Boulevard corridor.
  • Schluter-DITRA-HEAT-E perimeter movement joints. These fail when the concrete substrate below a paver overlay heaves just enough to crack the embedded plastic track. You’ll feel a raised trip edge on one side of the joint. The replacement is straightforward, but we have to grind out the old thinset bed to set the new track at the correct plane, which adds about 90 minutes to the job.
  • Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN and KERDI-LINE channels for paver patios with integrated drainage. The most common call we get is a blocked channel in a Fort Myers lanai-level paver deck where standing water won’t clear. Nine times out of ten the problem is sand or landscape debris packed into the grate, not a part failure. The tenth time, the channel body itself has cracked from sub-base settlement, and that’s a cut-out-and-replace.

To identify your part, look for the Schluter Systems stamp on the underside of any exposed profile or on the visible face of the drain grate. The model code and material code are both printed there. If the stamp is worn, measure the leg height and visible width with a tape, and send us a photo. We’ll match it. We carry OEM Schluter profiles and channels because the aftermarket equivalents we’ve tested don’t identically match the anodizing spec, and you’ll see a color shift at the joint within two seasons of Florida sun.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Edge or Drain Is Failing

  • Visible gap between the profile and the paver. This is usually sub-base settlement or thermal expansion pushing the paver field outward. In Fort Myers, shallow sand-set installations over uncured concrete collars are the top culprit. The fix requires lifting the affected pavers, rescreeding the bedding course, and resetting the profile.
  • Profile pulling away from the wall or slab edge. The thinset bond between the Schluter anchoring leg and the concrete has sheared. We see this most on south-facing exposures in Fort Myers, where daily heat cycling softens and re-hardens the bond over time. It won’t re-adhere; the old profile comes out and a new one goes in.
  • Water pooling against the profile instead of draining through. The Schluter channel or grate is clear, but water sits anyway. That tells us the pitch is shot underneath: the sub-base has settled unevenly and the channel is now a low-point trap. This one needs a full section re-slope, not just a part swap.
  • Paver rocking or tilting visibly at the border. The edge restraint has not actually failed, it was likely never installed. A surprising number of Fort Myers paver driveways built before 2010 skipped rigid edge restraint altogether, relying on the Schluter profile as a cosmetic trim piece. That works until it doesn’t, usually right after the first heavy August downpour saturates the sand joints.
  • Aluminum profile showing white, chalky pitting. Salt air and pool chemicals accelerate oxidation on standard aluminum, particularly within a few miles of Fort Myers Beach or the Caloosahatchee. Once the anodized layer is compromised, the profile loses structural rigidity and the paver edge starts to wander. Replacement with a marine-grade profile solves it permanently.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Schluter edge profile or drain-channel replacement on a Fort Myers driveway or paver patio lands in the $300-$1,200 range, installed. The spread depends on three things: linear footage, whether we’re peeling back pavers or just doing a surface swap, and what’s waiting underneath once we open it up. Here’s how it breaks down:

Parts: $18-$55 per 8-ft profile length for standard aluminum SCHIENE or QUADEC; $45-$90 per length for marine-grade stainless. KERDI-LINE channel bodies run $90-$180 per unit depending on width. We price parts at our cost and don’t mark them up.

Labor & materials: $200-$800 for the typical 10-25 linear-foot run, which includes removing the old profile, cleaning the substrate, cutting and setting the new profile in modified thinset with proper slope, and re-compacting the paver field if we lifted any. If we find rotted sub-base, we’ll show you before we touch it and give you a written line-item add-on. No hidden change orders.

Every Schluter part we install is covered by our 730-Day Done Right Promise. If the profile shifts, separates, or corrodes within two years, we’re back to fix it at our cost. You’ll also get Schluter’s manufacturer warranty on the part itself.

A typical Fort Myers paver driveway with a 40-linear-foot SCHIENE border that needs full replacement runs $900-$1,200 all-in. Call us at (844) 638-7249 and we’ll give you an exact quote based on your setup, not a range off a website.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a couple things you can check safely on your own. Clear debris from the Schluter drain grate with a garden hose and see if the water flows. Measure the visible profile height and width so you know what to ask for. If the profile is simply loose in one short section and the pavers are still tight, mark the spot and keep an eye on it. You’re not in danger of anything collapsing.

Where do-it-yourself goes sideways is pulling the old profile and trying to thinset a new one into an uneven, degraded substrate. Schluter profiles are designed to be set on a clean, flat plane against a properly cured concrete collar or wall. If your Fort Myers driveway has seen years of soil washout around the edges, the collar is likely cracked or pitched wrong, and a new profile set on top of it will fail the same way inside of two wet seasons. We bring a grinder, a proper screed, and the right modified thinset for exterior Florida conditions. We also carry every common Schluter profile on the truck, so we’re not guessing at the parts counter.

If you’re on the fence, call (844) 638-7249 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a weekend fix or something you want us to handle.
